This is our last week of school and I started getting a little anxious with summer break almost here. I am very good at filling the time and finding something to stay busy with. There's always something that is in desperate need of a good clean, an errand to run, or a new project to start. I knew that if we didn't do our summer planning, we wouldn't get off to a good start come Monday morning! I looked into a few summer classes/camps the kids might enjoy and decided to do some of our own camps right here at home (it really adds up when you start multiplying everything by 4)! The plan is to have each of the kids take a day when they will be in charge of organizing, teaching, and entertaining based on their topics chosen. Most of them are old enough to do their own research and collect any supplies if needed. We had family council and planned away. We first started out with the what our routine would be with chores in the morning. We have a chart for each kid so they are accountable for finishing their chores and not saying the classic "oh, I forgot about that one". Once chores are done, we will have a fun day camp!
Some of the topics they chose are: learn how to knit a bearded hat, make a quilt together, visit a flea market (Love it! I have no idea where they've heard of a flea market, but here we come Galt. Next to "flea market" they drew a "flea"; they may be surprised once we go shopping!), learn about blue prints, do a project involving wires, learn how to draw 3-D perspective, build epic forts, make homemade ice-cream, meet our new cousin Joseph (We're comin' to UT!), family history work, have an eating contest (This should be fun! I think "Studio C" had some influence on this topic), learn about another country, learn a new dance, go kayaking, build a Lego city together, visit all 3 temples around us, meet the prophet (not sure we can pull this one off, but we'll for sure learn more about him through research), learn how to binary finger count, read, make analysis posters, hike, swim, power circuits, do a science experiment and a few other ideas. The kids came up with some great topics that will keep us busy and focused on having fun this summer!
In my closet, I have the following poem below, posted to help keep me in check! I hope this summer I'm able to help these kids fulfill all their summertime dreams!
Doing It Over...
By Diane Loomans
If I had my child to raise all over again,
I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I'd finger-paint more, and point the finger less.
I would do less correcting and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less and know to care more.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious and seriously play.
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging and less tugging.
I'd see the oak tree in the acorn more often.
I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.
I'd model less about the love of power,
And more about the power of love.
